Mutual aid is what people do when they stop waiting for permission. Neighbors taking care of neighbors directly, without a charity deciding who is worthy or a government program that shows up late & leaves early. We share what we have · food, clothes, tools, books · because the people at the top have made it very clear they are not coming to save us.

This is not charity. You do not qualify for it, you do not apply for it, you do not thank anyone for it. You take what you need & you leave what you can, & that is the entire arrangement.

I grew up on food stamps. As a queer, neurodivergent, autistic person in Metro Detroit, I have been economically on the edge for a long time, & I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What has kept me going is a thing I keep relearning · the web of resources around us is actually abundant. We have enough food to feed everybody. We have enough of nearly everything. What we have is a distribution problem dressed up as a scarcity problem so that it looks natural & permanent. It is neither.

This shed is one small act that my collaborators & I take to fix the distribution, in one yard, on one block, where we actually live.

No. No forms, no income check, no proof of need, & no sign-up. Mutual aid runs on trust instead of paperwork. You take what is useful to you & that is the end of it.

This shed got built out of a dark stretch right before Thanksgiving 2025, mostly by spencer, alone, after asking my community to show up & watching almost nobody come. My chosen-family brother helped me salvage the lumber, my parents helped me hang the window & finish some walls in March, & I finally finished it myself in May 2026 & strong-armed it to the front yard on a dolly with flat wheels. I am sad about how much of it I did alone. I am thankful for the people who did show up. Both are true, & the shed is here now either way.

A rotating mix · free store goods [clothing & household items], shelf-stable pantry food & hygiene supplies, & books for all ages. What is actually in there changes daily depending on what neighbors drop off, so it is worth checking the latest update post before a trip.

Yes, & it is the whole point · this only works because people give what they can. Put anything you are dropping off in the green bin under the shed rather than on the shelves, so it can be inventoried & added to the running list. For the pantry, please keep it shelf-stable & unexpired.

Charity usually flows top-down, often with conditions, applications, & someone deciding who qualifies. Mutual aid is horizontal · neighbors sharing directly with neighbors, on the understanding that everyone both gives & receives at different times. You are not a case to be approved, you are part of the loop.

The backbone is Peter Kropotkin's Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution [1902] & the lifework of Detroit's Grace Lee Boggs. Adrienne Maree Brown's Emergent Strategy is in there too, along with Detroit organizers like General Baker, Herb Boyd, & Kenneth Cockrel. The short version · cooperation, not competition, is what actually lets a species & a city survive.
