The Queer Garden Network is an ongoing experiment in:

• decentralized leadership
• low-hierarchy organizing
• peer-to-peer knowledge sharing
• queer community building through gardening

From the beginning, the concept has been structured around “camps.”

Each camp is:

• a small local cluster of participants
• semi-autonomous
• connected to the broader network
• free to organize gatherings, projects, and events

These camps form the Queer Garden Network of Metro Detroit.

As we enter 2026, Camp MISC•aLAIR•é•Omm… is currently the largest active camp within the network.

From one perspective, it may even be the only consistently active camp right now - which is perfectly fine for a young experiment.

Camp MISC•aLAIR•é•Omm… currently acts as a hub for communication and coordination while other camps form, dissolve, and evolve across the Detroit region.

As of July 2026, the Detroit Queer Garden Network is not a legal entity, either a for-profit or not-for-profit corporation. We're a free association of interconnected human relationships without formal bylaws or organizational structure. We're organized by independent camps, which are loosely affiliated with each other, each of which run their own independent communication channels.

Initial planning happened in January and February of 2025, with our first official meeting that had 28 people in attendance March 15, 2025

We primary use Signal as it offers a privacy first space not connected to a nasty corporate structure attempting to monetize attention.

During our first growing season we organized primarily using Google Docs and Discord both of which are still live but deprecated.

• There is no cost and no formal membership.
• This is a network of humans who engage how, when, and to the level at which they would like.
• There are small costs to operate in the world, but we figure those out when they come up.

The Queer Garden Network is intentionally messy and experimental.

Instead of rigid hierarchical organizational structure, we relies on:

• Small groups organizing themselves
• People sharing knowledge directly with one another
• Lightweight coordination between camps

Some camps may flourish. Some may go dormant. The network persists through relationships, not hierarchy.

One of the goals of the network is for new camps to form organically.

You might consider starting a camp if you want to:

• host gardening meetups
• organize neighborhood gardening projects

• build queer ecological community in your part of Metro Detroit

There is no formal approval process.
