TLDR
Detroit Philosophy Salon is a monthly, volunteer-led philosophy group, very similar to a Socrates Cafe, Practical Philosophy meetup or Doubt On Tap in Ann Arbor. Each salon has a theme and a few facilitated questions set ahead of time, and we explore them together in small circles, and usually leave with more questions than we came with.
When: once a month, about two hours Where: Detroit, venue announced per event Cost: free or a small venue fee
Overview
Detroit Philosophy Salon started as an experiment… a post on r/Detroit (Reddit) asking whether anyone else wanted a place to think out loud about the big questions. A lot of people did, so here we are.
It's still very much under development, and it's organized as a community project of the MISC•aLAIR•é•Omm… It's volunteer-led and nonprofit, and nobody makes any money from it.
If you've been to a Socrates Cafe or a Practical Philosophy meetup, this will feel pretty familiar. Because we're in Detroit, though, we do it a little differently… slightly more structured, and leaning a bit more toward philosophical and existential questions, a bit less toward democracy and everyday philosophy.
How an Evening Works
- Theme: Each salon's theme is set ahead of time and posted in the Discord, so you can sit with it before you arrive.
- Facilitated questions: A few prepared questions guide each circle, though we're happy to go a little off script when the conversation pulls somewhere good.
- Explore: We dig in together, poking at the assumptions, pulling apart the concepts, and looking for the strongest objections and alternatives.
- Break: A short pause around the halfway point.
- Wrap: We trade book recommendations and share ideas for future themes.
Depending on turnout we may split into a few circles of ~6 to 8 people. You don't have to talk at all if you don't want to. Listening is a perfectly good way to take part.
What We Talk About
Philosophical questions, often leaning toward the existential. Things like:
- What is the nature of consciousness?
- What are the foundations of ethics?
- How do we understand personal identity?
Fair warning… this isn't a traditional philosophy group, at least not in the sense of working through Plato or Descartes. We've tried that before, and honestly nobody liked it. You're welcome to bring the classics in when they're useful, but the questions themselves are the main event.
We're open to all ways of knowing. Scientific materialism is welcome at the table, and so are contemplative, spiritual, and intuitive ways of making sense of things. Most of the time there isn't a single right answer… which is sort of the point.
Who It's For
Anybody is welcome. That said, the salon is intentionally on the more advanced end, and we're aiming for some real philosophical depth… at least that's the hope.
The bigger goal is to live well-examined lives and to build a community of thinkers here in Detroit.
Guidelines
A few agreements that keep the conversation open and worth showing up for.
First Time?
No philosophy background and no reading needed. Just show up.
A good night usually means you leave with more questions than you came with.
